Versagrit®, a unique, proprietary and exclusive formula
Versagrit® is a unique sustainable material created from an original and exclusive formula that offers incredible versatility, outstanding impact resistance, and excellent thermal and electrical insulation.
Due to these features, Versagrit® composites are suitable for use in various industrial sectors such as automotive, electrical, telecommunications, household items, and high-quality toilet seats, among others.
Created by COMSAN, a manufacturer of toilet seats for over 60 years in Barcelona, with more than 85 million Versagrit® toilet seats worldwide. The manufacturer of this innovative composite is Fenoquímica.
Innovative, versatile and long-lasting
Versagrit® is an innovative compound made by mixing flours produced from plant-based raw materials with a synthetic resin that acts as a clumping/agglutinating agent. More specifically, it belongs to a group of materials known as thermoset composites.
Classified as a thermoset, when Versagrit® is treated with pressure and temperature, the small resin molecules grow to fix the structure and moisten the natural components.
The result is a material that can withstand high temperatures, moisture and impacts with an exceptional life cycle!
Its main characteristics also include hardness and strength, thermal and electrical insulation, and a formula that is constantly evolving and innovating to meet the needs of the market, society and customers.
A concept with carbon offsetting
The Versagrit® concept stems from the union of two key factors that perfectly define it:
VERSA
The first two syllables of “versatility”, one of the essential characteristics of Versagrit®. Our product adapts to your needs by offering distinctive customisation options for every application, such as different shapes, thicknesses or colours.
GRIT*
This comes from its sandy appearance before being transformed but also refers to a concept that arose in the United States in 2004 to represent the effort, enthusiasm and perseverance needed to achieve long-term goals.
*Grit: from English, meaning sand.
Versagrit® is not just that.
It is a resounding statement of intent aimed at a more sustainable future!
60% of its material comes from 100% surplus and recycled plant-based and organic sources. Of that amount, 55% is plant-based material (waste wood flour (35-40%) and ground nut shells (15-20%)) and 5% comes from renewable resources.
This choice not only guarantees the quality of our products but also drives efficient natural resource management, thereby contributing to a positive environmental impact.
With that in mind and in order to help reduce waste from the timber and food industries, the plant-based raw materials from which we produce Versagrit® have a negative carbon footprint impact.
Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
As part of our ongoing effort to innovate and commit to more sustainable practices, we have taken action in partnership with CQMassó. By harnessing the circular economy production model, we have developed a new polymer compound that efficiently incorporates the waste generated during the toilet seat manufacturing process.
This breakthrough is based on harvesting surplus material from the manufacturing of COMSAN lids, mainly consisting of materials that come from surplus and recycled plant-based sources necessary for the manufacturing of COMSAN toilet lids. This compound, which can be adapted to suit various needs by using different polymer resins and pigments, may contain up to 50% wood flour. This demonstrates a genuine commitment to reducing waste and using recycled materials.

SGS
certification
At COMSAN, we have certified the origin of our Versagrit® material through SGS, the world’s leading company in testing, inspection, and certification. This official recognition confirms that Versagrit® is composed of 60% plant-based, organic, residual, and recycled sources, reinforcing our commitment to developing more environmentally responsible products.

From source
We do not believe in carbon offsetting as part of our Versagrit® manufacturing process. We believe that we should manage our environmental impact from within the productive and raw material selection process itself.
Versagrit® is a 100% Made in Spain material. In order to reduce our carbon footprint, we use raw materials from local suppliers to minimise our environmental impact during import and transportation. Furthermore, we have installed solar panels at our productive centre in order to reduce CO2 emissions.
